Belgian F1 Grand Prix

Belgian F1 Grand Prix Drivers and fans alike love races at Spa-Francorchamps.
A dull race at Spa is very rare, and most drivers today say that the course is one of very few challenging race tracks.

Definitely a Grand Prix not to be missed!

In 2009 the podium was incredible. Ferrari won for the first time and Force India came second. Who can forget the incredible crash that took Button and Hamilton out of the race?

Don't delay. This is one of our most popular trips and sells out before all the others.

About The Belgian Grand Prix

Belgian Grand Prix Information

The Belgian Grand Prix is held at Spa, close to the village of Francorchamps.

Located deep in the heart of the Ardennes forests the circuit undulates over the hills and is often subject to its own microclimate which makes for interesting and exciting races. The choice of tyres and suspension set ups at Spa are critical and with the sweeping downhill bends there is a great opportunity for drivers to prove just how good their skills really are.

Getting to Spa is not as easy as it may appear for those who are traveling from overseas. The nearest town of any size is Liege which is around 35 minutes drive from the track. Brussels by contrast is well over 2 hours away by motorway. The nearest large railway station is also in Liege.

Liege is an industrial city with a huge steel industry but there are some very attractive parts to the town and some excellent restaurants and bars. It is also served by a brand new (2009) International railway station that offers direct connections with Eurostar. It takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes to Brussels central.

Other cities that are easily accessible are Aachen which is right on the German border (about 1 hour from Spa) and Frankfurt.

The small town of Spa/Francorchamps is a very beautiful resort town. Of course it has its own spa and baths that date back to the 19th century.

Located at the bottom of a very long steep hill Spa is a great place to stop off for a drink or meal but during the F1 it is also incredibly expensive to stay there. There are 2 hotels in the town that raise their prices by 400% during the Formula 1 weekend. Thankfully the bars do not follow suit!

When you approach the circuit the road takes you to Eau Rouge and La Source. Of course La Source is named after the spring that feeds the spa’s of Spa. But what really matters is that the circuits most famous tight right hand bend is the first thing you see as you enter the circuit.
Directly in front of you is the main Paddock and pit lane and guests arriving on Thursday can take part in a pit lane walk along the pits. The drivers and teams are readily accessible and often sign autographs for fans. Be warned though it can get a bit manic with hundreds of fans crowded into a small area.

Gold and Silver Ticket holders are seated in the stands along the main straight and bronze ticket holders have free range across the non seated areas of the track. In fact we would recommend that ticket holders of any grade make the effort to explore the open areas. The walk through the forests is a magical experience. Well kept pathways wind their way through thick pine forests and the singing of the birds is interspersed with the roar of Formula 1 engines as they scream around the track.

All around the circuit are huge video screens where you can watch the action develop and if you also order a Kangaroo TV you are able to keep right to date with times and rankings as they develop.

It is possible to walk right around the circuit, with the exception of areas covered by Gold and Silver stands and after the race the drivers let of steam by dropping gears and “screaming engines” in front of the fans.
For those who are prepared and who take a seat or blanket there is always the option of scrambling up one of the steep banks to get a birds eye view of the race. We also recommend a pack lunch as it can get very busy at the “frites” stalls.

If you travel with Pumpkin Tours you will generally stay in Liege, although some prefer Brussels. The hotel is excellent and modern with full facilities. There are quite a few simple bars and restaurants next door which offer decent Belgian cooking for very reasonable prices. Moules et frites anyone?

At the track the Pit Village is well stocked with merchandise and there is also an unofficial village a few minutes walk from the entrance. There are some food stalls and beer and soft drinks are readily available on the circuit but they are more expensive than in the towns.

The Belgian Grand Prix is one of the few remaining races that maintains the traditions of the old with the facilities of the new.
