THE RACE DAY
Opening the card is the Queen Anne Stakes over a mile, bringing together Europe’s top older milers. The second race is the UK’s most international race, the King’s Stand Stakes over five furlongs and the opening British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge. There have been no fewer than four Australian-trained winners of the King’s Stand Stakes in recent times, beginning with Choisir’s ground-breaking victory in 2003 with Scenic Blast the latest to be added to the roll of honour for the visitors last year. Coupled with the second leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, the Golden Jubilee Stakes on the Saturday of Royal Ascot, the two famous sprints have attracted runners from as far afield as Japan, the USA, Hong Kong, New Zealand and South Africa, as well as from all over Europe.
The third race on the card is the St James’s Palace Stakes over a mile for three year old colts. It is the last opportunity of the season at the highest level for the top colts of the Classic generation to compete in their own age group before taking on older horses and therefore it often acts as the championship race in that division, bringing together winners of the various 2,000 Guineas’ of Europe. It is often a definitive guide to the merits of the English 2,000 Guineas against its European counterparts, regularly confirming it as the superior race of its type in Europe.
Following the three Group One races is the Coventry Stakes for two year old colts. Although restricted to Group Two class due to pattern restrictions on the two year old programme in the first half of the season, the Coventry is the early season European championship for younger male horses and one of the world’s most important races to the breeding industry.

History of the races
2009, Vision D’Etat, winner of the French Derby as a three year old, was victorious for France and he went on to win Hong Kong’s most prestigious and valuable race, the Hong Kong Cup, in his Royal Ascot-winning year.
In 2008, the Prince of Wales’s Stakes fell to the Irish-trained Duke of Marmalade, who went on to prove his class and versatility at the extended distance of a mile and a half in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes back at Ascot in July.
In 2007, the race went to another French-trained colt in Manduro. He achieved the highest official world ranking of any horse on the basis of his Royal Ascot victory over a vintage field including subsequent King Gorge and Arc Winner, Dylan Thomas.
The Wednesday card also includes two important Group Two races in the Windsor Forest Stakes over a mile for older fillies and mares, and the early season European championship for two year old fillies, the Queen Mary Stakes. The latter race was won with startling ease by the American-trained Jealous Again last year, who made all the running and never saw a rival.
